Next August, it will be 2 years since Google first announced Android Market, its mobile application store. First opened to users in October 2008, the company needed until February / March 2009 to add priced application support to Android Market for both developers and users in the US and the UK.

Straight out of Denmark comes a trio of additions to the ever-growing Android lineup, the result of “two years of top secret international development work” by Lumigon Corp. The first phones are the T1 and S1, both shipping before July, the latter of the two offering a sliding T9 keypad, both featuring Android 2.1, Freescale processors, 720p output over HDMI, FM tuning and broadcasting, and the handy ability to act as a universal remote.

As I had a layover in the New York (when traveling from Chile to the Netherlands) on the 14th of January I decided to buy a Google Nexus One by having an American colleague buy one for me a couple of days earlier. In the end I payed because of sales tax 560$ (390 euro). However I think it is not a bad price compared to the fact that the cheapest unlocked Motorola Milestone/Droid is 469 euro in the Netherlands. Compared to an unlocked iPhone at 641 euro it’s even a better deal.

Oh boy – queue up the backlash. Your parents always told you to read the fine print and the Nexus One Terms Of Sale reveal a troubling detail that we can’t quite figure out. If you buy a subsidized Nexus One through your carrier and cancel your account you not only have to pay an Early Termination Fee (ETF) to your carrier but ALSO have to pay GOOGLE an ETF that automatically charges your credit card the remainder of full price of the phone.

Just hours before the Android Press Event where the Google Nexus One phone is expected to be unveiled, we learn from French website Le Point that the Android-powered smartphone will be priced at €450 with no contract in France and in much of Europe with an expected launch in the next few weeks.

Vodafone says it will launch the Google-branded Nexus One phone in the UK within the next few weeks, despite claims from Google that it won’t be available in Europe until spring.
Speaking to StrategyEye, a Vodafone press spokesperson said the device will be available in the UK “in a matter of weeks”, but failed to give a precise launch date. “It’s going to start in the UK and we’ve got no dates for other countries after that,” the spokesperson said. “But we are in talks with the other European geographies.” An AFP report predicts French and German releases will be quick to follow a UK launch.
